DIYers Take Note – the 2019 Ford Ranger’s Oil Change Procedure Contains a Big Extra Step [UPDATED]

Ever swapped out the battery in a cloud-car Chrysler, or maybe an old Sebring or PT Cruiser? You’ll be reminded of that when the time comes to change your new-generation Ford Ranger’s oil, assuming you’re a proud member of the DIY crowd. Job One for those looking to freshen the Ranger’s internal lubricant, besides heading to the store for a couple of jugs of synthetic and a filter, is to break out the jack. You’ll need to remove a wheel. (Editor’s Note: Ford has reached out to us to inform us that the service procedure we referenced below is incorrect, and that the wheel does not need to be removed. We regret the error, and we have further addressed it here.) Because the 2.3-liter Ecoboost four-cylinder found in the 2019 Ranger isn’t exactly the same beast as that found in other Ford vehicles, the oil filter migrates to a slightly new location. A larger oil cooler means the filter no longer hangs towards the oil pan near the rear of the engine. Instead, the filter sticks out the left side, at right angles to the engine’s cylinders, making it less accessible for fumbling hands. Sliding under there and going to town just isn’t in the cards, at least for the oil filter phase of the...

Extrusion: How Much L/D Do You Really Need? : Plastics Technology

For most applications, you’ll need a longer two-stage screw to match the output of a single-stage screw. In the early 1960s, extruders typically had a length/diameter ratio of 20:1, and a machine with a 24:1 L/D was considered long. Since then, extruders have gotten longer, with the 30:1 to 36:1 L/D becoming the industry “standard.” Some extruders even exceed 40:1 L/D for special purposes like double venting, compounding, or high-speed processing. What benefits does the additional length provide? Mostly increased output and improved homogenization. Since the feed section stays approximately the same length, regardless of the L/D, the rest of the screw is devoted to melting and pumping. The deeper the screw channels, or the higher the specific output (lb/rpm), the more length you need to complete melting and develop the pressure necessary to push the polymer out the die. As designers reached these limits, extruders were built longer to handle the economic requirements to pump out more and better product. However, there are actual limits on increasing output as L/D is increased. Usually these limits are due to the inability of the feed section to deliver more polymer. On smaller-d...

Video: Pint-sized telehandler ‘tackles any tractor loader’

In some instances, farmers opt to buy dedicated handlers instead of front loaders for their tractors. But dedicated telehandlers can be expensive and the initial cost can be hard to justify on many farms. However, a new breed of compact telehandlers is bringing such machines within the reach of more and more farmers. Despite their diminutive dimensions, these small machines are deceptively capable. To find out more, Agriland spoke to John O’Boyle, Weidemann Ireland Sales Manager, at the recent 2017 FTMTA Farm Machinery Show in Co. Kildare. The most popular machine on Weidemann’s stand at the show was a T4512 telehandler – a small, ‘compact’ machine but one that O’Boyle says is a “very credible performer on a dairy farm”. He explained, “The T4512 is just 1.56m wide; the top of the cab is less than 2m high. Despite this, the machine can lift 1.2t to a height of 4.5m, thanks to its strong telescopic boom. “It is fitted with a 3-cylinder Yanmar. The lower-powered version is rated at 31hp; the higher-power version has 40hp on tap.” List prices for the T4512 start at less than €40,000 excluding VAT. According to O’Boyle, it’s one of the most most “competitively-priced machines of its...

Split system sales drop for the first time since 2006

Published by the Federal Department of Environment and Energy, the Expert Group has updated Cold Hard Facts 2019 with data collected during 2017 and 2018. It is the fourth edition of the Cold Hard Facts series which began in 2006. The Expert Group found that RAC services in all its forms were delivered by over 56 million individual pieces of equipment in Australia during 2018, compared to 54 million in 2016. In both 2017 and 2018, an estimated 2 million devices containing around 2,270 tonnes of residual refrigerant reached the end of their useful life. This included around 120 tonnes of refrigerant in domestic refrigerators and freezers, 1,480 tonnes in air conditioners, 430 tonnes in motor vehicles of all types, and 240 tonnes in commercial refrigeration equipment. The bank of high GWP refrigerants in Australia increased by five per cent from 2016 to 2018, from around 50,800 tonnes in 2016 to an estimated 53,300 tonnes in 2018. Analysis of equipment imports confirmed a rapid transition to the use of HFC-32 in small air conditioning systems. In 2018, HFC-32 systems made up 53% of all pre-charged small air conditioning units imported, an increase from 39% in 2016 and up from zer...

Three years after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued policy guidelines for pet diets that

Three years after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued policy guidelines for pet diets that claim to allay or treat disease, veterinarians continue to have questions about these products and their responsibilities when recommending them. In its April 2016 compliance policy guide on “Labeling and Marketing of Dog and Cat Food Diets Intended to Diagnose, Cure, Mitigate, Treat, or Prevent Diseases,” the FDA instructed staff and industry to use “enforcement discretion” when regulating such diets. The guidance allows such diets to be regulated as food instead of drugs, even though the FDA states in the CPG that these diets meet the statutory definition of a drug “[b]y virtue of their intended use to treat or prevent disease.”  Confusing the issue further is the fact that therapeutic diets are often informally called “prescription” diets. In fact, Hill’s, a leading player in the therapeutic-pet-diet market, has trademarked the term “Prescription Diet.” The FDA’s “enforcement discretion” comes with caveats, including that the diets be sold only under the direction of veterinarians. Exactly what...

APIC ’19: Asia petchems cautious; trade war worsens ahead of key industry event

SINGAPORE (ICIS)–Trades in Asia’s petrochemical markets are largely cautious ahead of a major regional conference, as uncertainty over the intensifying trade war between the US and China continued to cloud business sentiment. The trade war between the world’s two biggest economies has escalated as market players prepare for the 2019 Asia Petrochemical Industry Conference (APIC) in Taipei, Taiwan, on 16-17 May, with the theme: “Smart Petrochemical Processes – Sustainable Solutions Enabling a Better World”. Industry players were mostly mulling over the potential long-term impact of the latest round of tit-for-tat tariff hikes by the US and China. In the adipic acid and melamine markets, players were concerned that the trade war-related depreciation of the Chinese yuan (CNY) would dampen sentiment and exert downward pressure on prices in the long run. Downstream markets players in Asia-based olefins such as 2-ethyl hexanol (EH) and acrylic acid (AA) have adopted largely taken a wait-and-see attitude on the latest development. “Regarding US-China conflict, it is very hard to predict the outcome. It will change dramatically whenever Trump tweets anything...
